Earthquake Relief

On April 16th, 2016, the coastal region of Ecuador suffered one of the worst naural desasters it has ever experienced. An earthquake with a maginitude of 7.8 struck and destroyed six provences. Over 650 people lost their lives in the aftermath of the earthquake, and almost 30,000 have been left homeless.

The students of NHS rallied together to immediately look for what they could do to help the victims. With the help of the Student Governmnet, a collection was organized at school. The donations came flooding in each day, and within three days, NHS was able to fill two trucks full of boxes with donations to help our fellow brothers and sisters on the coast.

The National Honor Society also organized a Penny War to raise funds in order to help those affected by the coast. Penny Wars is a competetion in which students and teachers brought in pennies, dimes, nickels, quarters and other forms of money. Depending on the coin, students could choose to raise their points or lower those of other classes.

The students competed as a grade level against all other grade levels. The winner of the first ever Penny Wars was 8th grade with a total of 60, 890 points. In total, the students raised more than $2,700.00, which was donated to the Red Cross of Ecuador and used to help transport goods and volunteers to the coast.
